Let's talk about keeping your human hair wig looking gorgeous! We know that when you invest in a high-quality wig, you want it to stay beautiful for as long as possible. The good news? Washing your wig at home is totally doable with the right approach. We've put together this guide to help you maintain that fresh-from-the-salon look between visits.
How Often Should You Wash Your Human Hair Wig?
Wondering about the magic number for wig washing? For most people wearing their wig daily, about once a month (every 3-4 weeks) works well. But really, it depends on your lifestyle:
Hit the gym in your wig or live somewhere hot and humid? You might need more frequent washes
Only wear your wig for special occasions? You can definitely stretch the time between washes
The best approach is to pay attention to how your wig looks and feels rather than sticking to a strict schedule.
Your Wig Will Tell You When It Needs Washing
Look for these telltale signs:
Getting tangled more easily than usual
Hair feels a bit sticky or clingy
That heavy feeling like there's product buildup
Your gorgeous style has lost its bounce and natural movement
What Products Should You Use on a Human Hair Wig?
Using the right products makes all the difference for your high-end wig. Here's what to look for:
Skip the harsh stuff—no parabens or sulfates
Go for gentle, moisturizing formulas
Products specifically designed for human hair wigs are worth the investment
Our Nourished by Tiffani collection was created specifically for high-quality wigs:
Shampoo and Conditioner: Gentle formulas that clean without stripping away moisture
Hair Oil: This is a game-changer! Since wigs don't get natural oils from your scalp, a pump or two of oil weekly keeps your wig soft and silky
Detangler: A total lifesaver, especially for longer styles
Lace Cleanser: Keeps your hairline looking natural by removing makeup buildup
Want the complete package? Our five-piece kit has everything you need in one convenient set.
Let's Walk Through Washing Your Wig
First Things First: Prep Work
Before your wig touches water:
Brush it out thoroughly: Always start at the ends and work your way up (just like you would with natural hair)
Hold the lace area with one hand while brushing to protect it
Make sure all clips are closed
The Washing Process
Cool water only, please! Hot water is the enemy of wig longevity
Get your wig completely wet
Apply a small amount of shampoo and gently work it through
Always move your hands downward through the hair—this prevents tangles
Don't forget to flip the cap inside out and give the lace a gentle cleaning
Got Makeup on Your Lace?
If your lace is looking a bit darker from makeup transfer:
Flip the wig inside out after shampooing
Use just a tiny bit of lace cleanser on your fingertips
Gently work it into the lace
Rinse thoroughly
Conditioning is Key
Squeeze out excess water first (this helps the conditioner actually penetrate the hair)
Start applying conditioner at the ends, then work your way up
Keep the conditioner away from the roots (we don't want to loosen those knots!)
Let the conditioner do its thing for at least 30 minutes—this is where the magic happens
Rinsing and Drying
Rinse until the water runs completely clear—leftover conditioner is not your friend
Gently squeeze out water (don't wring or twist!)
Wrap in a towel "burrito-style" to absorb moisture
Spray with detangler throughout
Brush gently, starting from the ends
Air drying is best, but if you're in a hurry, blow dry on medium heat
